Bai He China Climbing with Gregory Z40
As climber,I always looking for a better climbing pack to carry my climbing equipment, a pack that can take the load of over 20kg of climbing equipment and still provides good stability and comfy while trekking on the rough terrain for long hours. I finally pick up Gregory Z40 to my climbing trip at Bai He China for testing.
initially i loaded in about 20kg of climbing equipment into the pack, shoes/harnesses in bottom compartment, climbing hardware in main compartment and rope on the top and treks to the crag for an hour, after minutes of trek my shoulder started feeling pain and soreness. Erm..the loads just too much for this pack due to the lightweight design skinny shoulder straps. Then I reduced the weight down to 14kg the following days and that was fined and comfortable enough. Fair enough, that is what the pack was designed for.

This pack comes with separated lower compartment that i used to keep my smelly climbing shoe and harness, front access to main compartment comes handy when you needed anything out in the middle of the treks. But you need to open the side compression buckles first, i felt it’s troublesome of doing the extra step. Front
pocket has good volume allows me to keep emergency items such as poncho, first
aids kit, headlamp and snacks. So far the waist belt hug me well and comfort
enough, but the small pocket at waist belt can’t store much thing. Common mesh back ventilation
system gives good airflow, no exception for this pack. Also noticed that the
pack does not built with many loops for external gear hanging and clipping,
obviously it's not design for heavy loading.
Gregory Z40 weighted at 1.5kg for the medium size and have been considerably lightweight in framed-pack category. yet still provide good accessibility and comforts. Best use for hiking, trekking and backpacking.
